Click to see Omo Valley GalleryOmo Valley - Colour Portraits

A series of images from across Ethiopia's Lower Omo Valley, taken in late 2009, of individuals that I met from the Hamer, Nyangatom, Karo, Mursi and Banna communities. Although the Lower Omo Valley certainly receives the most attention from outsiders at this triangle of human diversity in Kenya, Sudan, and Ethiopia, it is perhaps obvious why. The colours that adorn individuals from these groups are striking; when viewed away from the powerful, bleaching African sunlight they take on an almost luminous effect.

The Himba socieities in Namibia's rugged Kaokoland region are visually unique, patricularly the women who use ochre and buttermilk to create a beautiful metallic sheen on their skin. The skin glows an earthy, metallic red over a perfect brown base. It is a colour and effect rarely ever seen elsewhere, with the exception of small parts (i.e. the neck and hair) of the Hamer from the Omo Valley in Ethiopia. The combination of colour and reflectivity of light on the female Himba skin is an incredibly powerful vision; I hope that I captured some of this in this series.

Black and white images from some of West Africa's most remote societies, including the Wodaabe and Fula in Niger, the Tuareg in Mali, The Tamberma in Togo and Betammaribe in Benin.

A series that illustrates some of the unique cultures of West Africa's most remote groups. These societies, most of which were almost entirely removed from the more developed lifestyles of their fellow countrymen and women, share a beauty and distinctiveness in their appearance that remains intact even today.

Twenty images from remote societies in the far north of Kenya, including the Samburu, Rendille, Turkana and Pokot.

These images were gathered from 6 weeks spent hitching through Kenya's arid and remote north. The nomadic and semi-nomadic groups featured in this series, in some cases engaged in armed conflicts with each other, share a beauty and vibrancy in their appearance that is similar to the societies of Ethiopia's Omo Valley.
